What is SimpleITK?

SimpleITK is a simplified interface to the Insight Toolkit, purpose-built for medical image analysis. It handles the formats, spatial metadata and registration algorithms that clinical imaging requires, and understands physical coordinates rather than treating images as bare pixel arrays.

Where SimpleITK is used

Effectively a medical imaging specialisation. Radiology research, radiotherapy planning, surgical navigation and clinical AI pipelines all use ITK or SimpleITK for I/O, registration and resampling.

Roles that ask for SimpleITK

  • Medical Imaging Scientist
  • Research Scientist, Medical AI
  • Image Processing Engineer
  • Machine Learning Engineer, Healthcare
  • Algorithm Engineer

SimpleITK jobs — common questions

Why not just use NumPy arrays for medical images?

Because medical images carry spatial metadata — voxel spacing, origin and orientation — that must be preserved for measurements to be physically meaningful. SimpleITK tracks this properly, whereas treating a scan as a bare array silently discards it and causes real clinical errors.

What is image registration and why does it dominate this library?

Aligning two scans so corresponding anatomy overlaps — across time, modality or patient. It is central to radiotherapy planning, longitudinal studies and atlas-based segmentation, and ITK’s registration framework is the field’s reference implementation.

Which formats does medical imaging work involve?

DICOM as the clinical standard, and NIfTI in research, particularly neuroimaging. Handling both, along with their metadata quirks, is a routine part of these roles.
