How to hire pose estimation engineers
Pose estimation locates the keypoints that define an articulated structure — human joints, hand landmarks, animal skeletons — or recovers the full 6-DoF position and orientation of a rigid object. It converts pixels into geometry that downstream systems can reason about.
What the market looks like
The requirements diverge sharply by application. Human pose for sports analytics, hand tracking for AR, and 6-DoF object pose for robotic grasping share a name but little else, so a strong candidate in one is not automatically useful in another.
Where the candidates are
Sports technology and athlete monitoring, AR/VR platforms, physiotherapy and healthcare movement analysis, and industrial robotics. Sports technology in particular is a concentrated and well-networked community.
How to screen for it
- Ask about top-down versus bottom-up approaches and the crowd-size trade-off.
- Ask how they handle occlusion and self-occlusion, which is where these systems actually fail.
- For 6-DoF work, ask how they evaluate — good answers separate rotation and translation error.
