Not yet in mainstream deployment. Neural codecs beat classical ones on rate-distortion in benchmarks, but decode complexity, hardware support and standardisation keep HEVC, AV1 and VVC dominant in production. Most roles touch both worlds.
What skills do compression roles look for?
Information theory, transform coding, entropy coding and rate-distortion optimisation, plus strong C++ for codec work. Familiarity with FFmpeg internals and the reference implementations of common standards is a practical advantage.
Is this a growing area?
Steadily rather than explosively. Demand tracks video traffic growth, and the rise of large camera deployments and on-device generative video has renewed interest in learned and task-aware compression.
