Autonomous driving experience transfers directly and is the most common route in. The differences are operational rather than technical — longer deployment lifetimes, harsher environments, and different regulatory regimes. Rail in particular has safety standards comparable to automotive but a smaller talent pool competing for roles.

Constrained environments, often. A train follows fixed track and a port vehicle operates in a controlled yard, which makes some problems easier — but operating conditions are harsher and equipment lifetimes are measured in decades rather than years.

Is this a growing area?

Steadily. Port automation, rail obstacle detection and traffic infrastructure monitoring all have clear economic cases, and they attract less competition for talent than passenger autonomy.

What is distinctive about the engineering?

Longevity and robustness. Systems installed today may run for fifteen years with minimal maintenance, in weather that would disable a consumer device. That shapes every design decision.
