The split matters: autonomy startups tend toward research-forward work, while OEM and supplier roles are more process-heavy and validation-driven.
The typical stack
C++ dominates production code with Python for research. Perception runs on automotive-qualified silicon or NVIDIA platforms, optimised through TensorRT. ROS 2 appears in development, less often in production vehicles. Simulation and large-scale log replay infrastructure is central to how these teams work.

What makes these roles well paid?
