Defence and aerospace computer vision covers surveillance and reconnaissance, autonomous systems, missile and targeting systems, satellite imagery analysis and aircraft inspection. The work often involves sensing modalities rarely seen elsewhere — infrared, synthetic aperture radar, hyperspectral — and operates under classification constraints.

The typical stack
C++ and MATLAB are both prevalent, the latter more than in any other vertical. Deployment frequently targets FPGA or specialised hardware for latency and power reasons. Modality-specific processing for SAR, infrared and hyperspectral data is common and does not transfer from RGB experience.
Moving into defense / aerospace
Citizenship and security clearance are usually the binding constraint rather than technical skill, and clearance takes months to obtain. Modality experience in SAR, infrared or hyperspectral is a strong differentiator because so few people have it. Defence technology startups often have lower clearance barriers than primes for initial roles.

Do I need security clearance to apply?
Frequently, though many employers will sponsor clearance for the right candidate. The practical requirement is usually citizenship, which cannot be sponsored. Cleared candidates command a meaningful premium precisely because of this bottleneck.
Is defence work technically interesting?
Often more so than its reputation suggests, particularly in sensing. Working with SAR, hyperspectral or event-based data involves genuinely different problems from RGB computer vision, and the constraints are unusually demanding.
How does compensation compare?
Primes typically pay below leading technology companies but offer stability and unusual technical depth. Defence technology startups have moved closer to technology-sector compensation, which has shifted the market.
