Low resolution, low contrast, absence of texture and colour, non-uniformity requiring periodic calibration, and very little labelled public data. Pre-trained RGB models transfer poorly, so teams often train from scratch on modest datasets.
Why is thermal used in automotive?
Because pedestrians and animals emit heat and remain visible when headlights and camera exposure fail — unlit roads, glare, fog. Several suppliers position it as a complement to visible cameras and radar rather than a replacement.
Are there export control implications?
Often, yes. Higher-performance infrared sensors are subject to export controls in several jurisdictions, and roles at defence contractors frequently require citizenship or security clearance as a result.
