What is FPGA?

What makes FPGAs attractive for vision?
Deterministic latency and pipeline parallelism. Processing can begin as pixels arrive rather than after a full frame is buffered, which no CPU or GPU architecture can match, and power efficiency is excellent for fixed workloads.
What skills are required?
HDL — VHDL or Verilog — or high-level synthesis, plus fixed-point arithmetic, timing closure and vendor toolchains from AMD/Xilinx or Intel/Altera. It is a hardware discipline that happens to process images.
How does this pay compared with software CV roles?
Generally well, because the skill combination is rare and the demand from defence, aerospace and high-speed industrial customers is steady. The trade-off is a narrower job market concentrated in specific sectors and locations.
