What is Filter Design?
Filter design covers the construction of convolution kernels and frequency-domain operators that suppress noise, sharpen edges, or isolate particular spatial frequencies. It is classical signal processing applied to images, and it remains essential wherever compute is tight or behaviour has to be provably predictable.
Where Filter Design is used
Camera ISP pipelines, ultrasound and X-ray preprocessing, and embedded inspection systems all depend on hand-designed filters running before any learned model sees the data.

Is filter design still relevant now that CNNs learn their own filters?
Yes, in two places. Preprocessing before a network still uses designed filters, and any system with hard latency or power budgets — embedded inspection, camera ISPs, medical devices — often cannot afford a learned model where a well-chosen kernel does the job deterministically.
What background do these roles expect?
Solid signal processing fundamentals: convolution, the Fourier and wavelet transforms, sampling theory, and filter families such as Gaussian, Sobel, Laplacian of Gaussian, bilateral and Wiener. An electrical engineering background is common but not required.
Which industries hire most for this?
Machine vision and industrial inspection vendors, medical device manufacturers, camera and sensor companies, and defence imaging contractors. The work tends to sit closer to hardware than typical deep learning roles.
