Industrial inspection — machine vision — automates quality control, defect detection and process monitoring on production lines. It is the oldest commercial application of computer vision and remains one of the largest by deployment count, though it is far less visible than newer applications.

Machine vision system integrators, semiconductor and electronics manufacturers, automotive and pharmaceutical producers, food processing and packaging companies, and the camera and sensor vendors serving them.

The typical stack

C++ with OpenCV, often alongside commercial machine vision libraries. Deployment is typically on industrial PCs running Windows or Linux, with OpenVINO common given the prevalence of Intel hardware. Classical methods remain heavily used because lighting is controlled and determinism is valued.

The skills that matter — classical image processing, lighting and optics, deterministic pipelines — are undervalued elsewhere, so someone strong in them is competitive quickly. Is machine vision less advanced than other computer vision work?

Different rather than less advanced. Throughput, reliability and validation requirements are severe — a line running thousands of parts an hour cannot stop — and a deterministic classical pipeline is often genuinely the better engineering choice.

Is deep learning being adopted here?

Increasingly, particularly for defect classes that are hard to specify explicitly. But it supplements rather than replaces classical methods, and explainability requirements limit where it can be used.

What makes this a good career choice?

Stability, real demand, and less competition for roles than in fashionable verticals. It is also unusually satisfying work in that systems are deployed and measurably improve a process.
