What is OpenVINO?
OpenVINO is Intel’s toolkit for optimising and deploying inference across Intel CPUs, integrated GPUs, NPUs and VPUs. It is the main route to efficient vision inference on x86 hardware without a discrete GPU, which describes a great deal of industrial equipment.
Where OpenVINO is used
Factory inspection systems, retail analytics appliances and smart cameras built on Intel platforms, where adding a discrete GPU is impractical on cost, power or form-factor grounds.

When would a team choose OpenVINO over TensorRT?
When the deployment target is Intel rather than NVIDIA — industrial PCs, edge appliances and embedded x86 systems. Much of the machine vision industry runs on Intel hardware, so OpenVINO is the natural fit there.
What performance can be expected on CPU?
Substantially better than naive framework inference, thanks to INT8 quantisation, graph optimisation and AVX/VNNI vectorisation. It will not match a discrete GPU, but it is often enough for the frame rates industrial inspection actually requires.
Is OpenVINO a common job requirement?
Less common than TensorRT overall, but a strong signal in machine vision and industrial automation roles. In that sector it is often specifically requested.
