What is Stereo Vision?

Stereo vision recovers depth by comparing two views of the same scene, matching corresponding pixels and converting their disparity into distance through the calibrated baseline and focal length. It is the most established passive method of obtaining 3D structure from cameras alone.

Where Stereo Vision is used

Driver assistance systems, warehouse and agricultural robots, headset depth sensing and robotic bin-picking all use stereo rigs, often because they are cheaper and more robust outdoors than active depth sensors.

How does stereo compare with LiDAR and structured light?

Stereo is passive, cheap and works in sunlight, but struggles on textureless surfaces and degrades with distance since accuracy falls off with the square of range. LiDAR gives direct, accurate range at higher cost; structured light is precise indoors but fails outdoors. Many systems fuse them.

What are the key algorithms?

Semi-Global Matching remains the classical workhorse and is implemented in hardware on many platforms. Learned stereo — PSMNet, RAFT-Stereo and successors — gives better results on benchmarks, with cost-volume construction as the shared underlying concept.

Why does calibration matter so much for stereo?

Disparity converts to depth through the baseline and focal length, so small calibration errors produce large depth errors at range. Production stereo systems need rectification, thermal-drift handling and often online self-calibration.
