What is Camera Calibration?
Camera calibration determines the intrinsic parameters of a camera — focal length, principal point and lens distortion — and the extrinsic transform relating it to other sensors or the world. Without it, no measurement made from an image can be trusted in metric terms.

What is the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic calibration?
Intrinsics describe the camera itself — how 3D points project onto the sensor, including lens distortion. Extrinsics describe where the camera sits relative to something else: another camera, a LiDAR, a robot base, or the vehicle frame.
Why is calibration a dedicated job title?
Because at fleet scale it becomes an engineering discipline in its own right — designing targets and rigs, building factory procedures, monitoring drift in the field, and running online recalibration. Autonomous vehicle and robotics companies routinely hire specifically for it.
What is hand-eye calibration?
Solving for the rigid transform between a robot end-effector and a camera mounted on it, typically formulated as AX = XB. It is a standard requirement in robotic manipulation and a very common interview question.
