What is SLAM?

SLAM — simultaneous localisation and mapping — builds a map of an unknown environment while tracking the sensor’s pose within it. It is the core capability that lets a robot, drone or headset operate somewhere it has never been, without external positioning infrastructure.

Where SLAM is used

Warehouse and domestic robots, drones operating without GPS, AR headsets and indoor mapping systems all run SLAM continuously, usually fusing cameras with IMU and sometimes LiDAR.

What is the difference between SLAM and visual odometry?

Visual odometry estimates incremental motion and accumulates drift indefinitely. SLAM adds a map, loop closure and global optimisation, so revisiting a known place corrects the accumulated error. The distinction comes up in almost every interview.

Which SLAM systems should I be familiar with?

ORB-SLAM3 as the reference feature-based visual-inertial system, plus LSD-SLAM or DSO for direct methods, Cartographer for LiDAR, and increasingly the neural and Gaussian-splatting variants. Understanding the factor-graph backend matters more than any single system.

Is SLAM a well-paid specialisation?

It is among the better-paid areas of computer vision. The skill combination — multiple view geometry, non-linear optimisation, real-time C++ and sensor fusion — is genuinely scarce, and demand from robotics, AR and drone companies is persistent.
