Ceres is more general, better documented and more actively maintained, so new projects often prefer it. g2o remains widespread because so much existing SLAM code is built on it and its graph abstraction maps neatly onto pose-graph problems.

What is a pose graph?

A graph where nodes are robot or camera poses and edges are relative transform measurements with uncertainty. Optimising it distributes accumulated drift consistently, which is what makes loop closure correct a trajectory.

What background does this require?

Non-linear least squares, sparse linear algebra, Lie groups for representing rotations, and robust cost functions for outlier handling. It is one of the more mathematically demanding tools in the vision stack.
