What is COLMAP?

COLMAP is a structure-from-motion and multi-view stereo pipeline that reconstructs camera poses and dense 3D geometry from unordered image collections. It is the de facto standard for photogrammetric reconstruction and the usual source of camera poses for NeRF and Gaussian splatting.

Where COLMAP is used

Photogrammetry for survey and inspection, 3D capture for AR content and e-commerce, cultural heritage scanning, and the preprocessing step for almost all neural rendering work.

COLMAP jobs — common questions

Why is COLMAP used as a preprocessing step for NeRF?

Because neural rendering methods need accurate camera poses and intrinsics, which they do not estimate themselves. COLMAP supplies them, and pose quality is often the limiting factor in the final reconstruction.

What makes COLMAP reconstructions fail?

Insufficient overlap between images, textureless or reflective surfaces, repetitive structure causing incorrect matches, motion blur, and varying illumination across the capture. Capture protocol matters more than parameter tuning.

Is COLMAP used commercially?

Widely, both directly and as a component inside commercial photogrammetry products. Survey, construction technology and 3D capture companies all build on it or on close equivalents.
