Computer vision in agriculture

Agricultural computer vision supports precision farming — crop and weed identification, yield estimation, livestock monitoring, disease detection and autonomous machinery. Conditions are unusually hostile for vision: uncontrolled lighting, weather, dust, and enormous natural variation between fields and seasons.

The typical stack

Python and C++ with deployment onto embedded hardware mounted on machinery or drones. Multispectral and hyperspectral imaging is common because plant health is visible in bands the eye cannot see. Connectivity is often poor, so edge processing is the norm rather than the exception.

What makes agricultural vision technically hard?

Variation. Lighting changes hourly, plants change daily, varieties differ regionally, and weather is uncontrolled. A model that performs well in one field can fail in the next one over, which makes robustness the central problem rather than accuracy.

Is hyperspectral imaging important here?

Very. Plant stress, nutrient deficiency and disease are often detectable in specific spectral bands well before they are visible to the eye, which is why multispectral and hyperspectral sensing is more common in agriculture than almost anywhere else.

Where is this industry concentrated?

It follows agriculture rather than technology hubs, so opportunities are more geographically distributed than in other verticals — the Netherlands, the US Midwest and California, Australia, Brazil and India all have real activity.
