Because the output is a sparse, asynchronous stream of events rather than a dense frame. Teams either accumulate events into frame-like representations — losing some temporal precision — or use spiking and graph-based networks designed for asynchronous input.
What are the real advantages over a fast conventional camera?
Microsecond temporal resolution without motion blur, dynamic range above 120 dB, low power, and low data rates in static scenes. A high-speed camera can match the frame rate but not the power, bandwidth or dynamic range profile.
Is this a viable career specialisation?
It is small but growing, with sensor makers such as Prophesee, iniVation and Samsung, plus research groups and a widening set of robotics and AR adopters. Expect a research-leaning bar and relatively few but well-differentiated openings.
