Usually one of two things: defining what the accelerator must support by characterising target workloads, or building the compiler and quantisation toolchain that maps trained models onto the hardware. Both need real ML understanding alongside hardware fluency.
Why choose custom silicon over a Jetson or similar?
Volume economics and power. At millions of units, a custom chip costs a fraction per device and can hit power budgets no general-purpose part reaches. The trade-off is enormous development cost and inflexibility once fabricated.
Who hires for this?
