Computational photography uses computation to produce images that optics alone could not capture — burst fusion, portrait bokeh, night modes, panoramas and HDR merging. Every modern smartphone camera is far more software than lens.

What does an ISP engineer actually work on?
The image signal processing pipeline between sensor and final picture: demosaicing, black level and lens shading correction, white balance, tone mapping, noise reduction and sharpening — usually under tight real-time constraints on dedicated hardware.
How much of this is deep learning now?
A growing share, but the classical pipeline has not gone away. Learned components are typically inserted at specific stages — denoising, demosaicing, tone mapping — while the overall architecture and its hardware constraints remain.
Which employers hire for it?
Apple, Google, Samsung and Qualcomm run the largest teams, alongside camera makers and the Chinese handset manufacturers. Competition is strong and roles usually expect real hardware-adjacent experience.
