How to hire perception engineers
A perception engineer builds the part of an autonomous system that turns raw sensor data into a model of the surrounding world — what is there, where it is, and how it is moving. The output feeds planning and control, so the role is judged on reliability and latency as much as accuracy.

What the market looks like
A genuinely scarce role, and the scarcity is structural: it needs vision, 3D geometry, estimation theory and real-time C++ at once, and the people who have all four are mostly already inside autonomy companies. Expect a long search, competitive offers, and heavy concentration in a handful of cities.
What to expect at each level
Junior
Implements and tunes perception components against recorded data under supervision.
Mid
Owns a sensor modality or a stage of the pipeline and debugs it against real logs.
Senior
Designs the perception architecture, decides the fusion strategy, and owns the failure analysis.
Staff / Principal
Accountable for whether the perception stack is safe enough to deploy, and can defend that position.
What a strong candidate looks like
- Has debugged perception failures from real vehicle or robot logs, not just datasets
- Thinks in coordinate frames and asks about extrinsics and time synchronisation early
- Treats latency as a correctness property, not an optimisation
- Can articulate what the planner needs from perception and why
How to screen for it
- Ask about a time synchronisation or calibration bug they chased. Everyone who has done this work has a story; nobody who has only read about it does.
- Ask how they would validate that a perception change is safe to ship. Strong answers involve regression suites over logged scenarios, not offline metrics alone.
- Probe on sensor failure modes — what radar sees that cameras do not, and where LiDAR degrades.

- Screening on deep learning depth alone, when much of the hard work is geometry and systems
- Underestimating how much candidates care about whether your data and simulation infrastructure is any good
- Assuming an autonomous driving background transfers unchanged to indoor robotics, or vice versa

Common questions
What is the difference between a perception engineer and a computer vision engineer?
Scope and constraints. Perception engineers work on multi-sensor, real-time systems where output feeds control, so 3D geometry, estimation and latency dominate. Computer vision engineers often work on single-modality problems where accuracy matters more than timing.
Can I hire from adjacent fields?
Robotics and aerospace guidance backgrounds transfer well, because the estimation and coordinate-frame fundamentals are shared. Pure deep learning backgrounds transfer less easily — the geometry gap is the harder one to close.
Is remote hiring realistic for this role?
Harder than most CV roles. The work depends on hardware access, logged data and often a test vehicle or robot, so teams tend to want people on site at least part of the time.
