How to hire object detection engineers
Object detection locates and classifies multiple objects in an image, returning a bounding box and label for each. It is the single most widely deployed computer vision capability in industry, and the entry point for most applied CV work.
What the market looks like
The pool is large but highly variable. Almost anyone can fine-tune YOLO on a clean dataset; the scarce skill is making detection hold up on your data, at your operating point, under your latency budget. Screen for that gap rather than for framework familiarity.
Where the candidates are
Broad availability across industries, which makes this a good role for widening your search. Candidates from retail analytics, security, industrial inspection and autonomy all transfer readily between domains.
How to screen for it
- Ask how they set the confidence threshold. Strong candidates tie it to the business cost of a false positive versus a miss.
- Ask how they handled class imbalance or a rare but critical class.
- Ask what their mAP did not tell them — good answers involve per-class and per-object-size breakdowns.
