How to hire slam engineers

SLAM — simultaneous localisation and mapping — builds a map of an unknown environment while tracking the sensor’s pose within it. It is the core capability that lets a robot, drone or headset operate somewhere it has never been, without external positioning infrastructure.

What the market looks like

SLAM sits at the intersection of multiple view geometry, non-linear optimisation and real-time C++, and few engineers have all three. The people who do are concentrated in a small number of robotics, AR and drone companies, and are rarely on the open market for long.

Where the candidates are

Robotics and drone companies, AR/VR platforms, autonomous vehicle localisation teams, and academic groups working on visual-inertial odometry. Contributors to ORB-SLAM, OpenVSLAM and similar projects are a productive and often overlooked pool.

How to screen for it

  • Ask them to distinguish SLAM from visual odometry. Anyone who has done the work answers immediately with loop closure and global optimisation.
  • Ask what breaks their system — textureless corridors, aggressive motion, dynamic scenes — and what they did about it.
  • Ask how they handle initialisation and relocalisation after tracking loss.
