How to hire spatial computing engineers

Scene reconstruction builds a 3D model of an environment from images or depth data, producing meshes, point clouds, signed distance fields or neural representations. It spans offline high-fidelity capture and online reconstruction running live on a robot or headset.

What the market looks like

Spatial computing spans reconstruction, tracking, rendering and device constraints, and candidates usually have two of the four. The neural rendering wave has grown the pool, but many newer candidates know the learning side without the underlying geometry.

Where the candidates are

AR/VR platforms, headset manufacturers, virtual production and visual effects, digital twin and construction technology, and 3D capture companies. Graphics engineers with geometry experience are a strong adjacent pool.

How to screen for it

  • Ask where the camera poses come from in their pipeline. Candidates who cannot answer have only used neural rendering as a black box.
  • Ask about the trade-offs between mesh, point cloud, TSDF and Gaussian representations.
  • Ask how they handle occlusion between real and virtual content.
