Demand has broadened well beyond research robotics into warehouse, agricultural and inspection applications, while the supply of engineers who can work on real hardware has not kept pace. Candidates who have shipped robots that operate unattended are markedly scarcer than those from research backgrounds.

What a strong candidate looks like
- Has worked on a robot that ran without a human watching it
- Fluent in ROS 2 tooling — tf trees, bag debugging, QoS behaviour
- Designs for degraded sensing rather than assuming clean input
- Understands the compute and power budget they are working inside
How to screen for it
- Ask what broke in the field and how they found it. Field experience is unmistakable in the answer.
- Ask how they would localise a robot in a warehouse with repetitive aisles — a good probe for practical SLAM understanding.
- Ask about the trade-off between adding a sensor and improving an algorithm.

Do candidates need ROS experience?
Practically speaking yes, and ROS 2 specifically for new development. A strong engineer can learn it, but on a small team the ramp is real, and ROS fluency includes debugging habits that take time to build.
How different is this from autonomous driving perception?
The fundamentals are shared but the constraints differ sharply. Robotics tends toward tighter compute budgets, closer-range sensing and manipulation requirements; driving tends toward higher speeds, longer range and heavier safety process.
Can I hire remotely?
Partially. Algorithm development travels; hardware bring-up and field debugging do not. Most teams settle on hybrid with regular access to the robots.
