What is ROS?
ROS, the original Robot Operating System, provides the middleware, message passing, tooling and package ecosystem that most research and many commercial robots were built on. ROS 1 reached end of life in 2025, but a very large installed base and codebase remain in service.
Where ROS is used
Mobile robots, manipulators, drones and research platforms. Legacy ROS 1 systems are common in fielded products and in academic codebases that industry still builds upon.

Should I still learn ROS 1?
Learn ROS 2 first. ROS 1 knowledge remains useful because so much existing code and so many deployed systems use it, and migration work is a real source of jobs — but new development has moved on.
What does ROS actually give you?
A publish-subscribe message bus, a package and build system, coordinate frame management through tf, visualisation via RViz, recording and replay with bags, and a large ecosystem of drivers and algorithm packages.
Is ROS experience expected for robotics vision roles?
Almost always. Perception in robotics is delivered as ROS nodes, and being fluent in the tooling — tf trees, bag debugging, launch files — is assumed rather than taught on the job.
