How to hire calibration engineers
Camera calibration determines the intrinsic parameters of a camera — focal length, principal point and lens distortion — and the extrinsic transform relating it to other sensors or the world. Without it, no measurement made from an image can be trusted in metric terms.
What the market looks like
At fleet scale calibration becomes its own discipline — target design, factory procedure, drift monitoring and online recalibration — and very few engineers have done it at production scale rather than in a lab.
Where the candidates are
Autonomous vehicle and robotics companies with deployed fleets, metrology and machine vision vendors, and AR headset teams. Metrology backgrounds bring rigour that transfers well.
How to screen for it
- Ask how calibration error propagates into depth error at range. This should be immediate.
- Ask about hand-eye calibration, or how they detect drift in the field.
- Ask what their factory calibration procedure looked like and what its throughput was.
